Studying business for a digitally secure tomorrow

April 8, 2024 - 3 min read

Sushmitha moved to Australia to explore a world of possibilities for cyber safety advocacy and action. She is currently enrolled in the MBA (International) with a major in cyber law at Deakin University, which enables her to combine her business studies with her passion for cyber safety.

Sushmitha is a certified cybercrime intervention officer registered with the National Security Database, India. As a founder of DIGISAFE, a startup focused on protecting young adults from cybercrime and digital addiction, Sushmitha knew she wanted to learn more and do more. She is now taking advantage of practical learning at Deakin, delving into case studies, working on research papers, and taking up real-world challenges in her field.

Sushmitha’s studies have enabled her to bridge academia with holistic work experience, something that she was looking forward to at Deakin. It lets her improve upon her existing skills and expand her knowledge both theoretically and practically.

‘The curriculum is designed in a way that requires you to be professionally sound and it makes you think hard and take up the challenge,’ she says. ‘With mentors who are extremely supportive and invested in my success, I feel confident and equipped to make a difference in the world.’

At Deakin, Sushmitha has found an environment that encourages her to think deeply and come up with practical solutions to complex problems as she gains a deeper understanding of the subject matter. ‘It sets you up to succeed in real-life work scenarios,’ she says.

Support from Deakin

Sushmitha is a proud recipient of Deakin’s Vice Chancellor’s 100% Meritorious Scholarship.

Sushmitha feels 100% confident that the scholarship will help her focus better on her goals and boost her endeavours to make a significant impact in the world of digital safety. ‘My commitment to making a difference in society, is aligned with Deakin’s vision of changing lives. It is truly admirable,’ she says.  She encourages future students to believe in their hard work and honest efforts and not give in to doubt when they apply for the scholarship.

Life at Deakin

So how is Sushmitha’s life as an international student at Deakin?

For international students like her, Sushmitha recommends the Student Central as the go-to destination to have doubts clarified, seek assistance with course planning, and have even the most basic of queries resolved. ‘One thing I really love about Deakin,’ she says, ‘is the one-on-one student support that you receive at the university with complete understanding of challenges faced by new students. From the moment you set foot to settling down and finding your way around, you never feel alone.’

Sushmitha believes that coming to Australia has opened a world of limitless possibilities for her.

She is now working on creating a strong foundation and networking with the right individuals and organisations to accelerate the best opportunities for internships and work roles.
