Opportunity and purpose in sport management

Moving to a new country is always a challenge but for Anushka Samuel, her background as a former Indian national footballer has given her a unique space in Australia’s thriving sports ecosystem. Pursuing her Master of Sport Management (Professional) at Deakin University, Anushka brings with her both passion and purpose.
Surrounded by peers at Deakin who have competed at national and international levels in various sports, Anushka values shared experiences that foster an environment of continuous growth and innovation.
‘Deakin has provided the right environment for me to transition from professional sport on-field to off-field,’ she explains.
Experiencing what Melbourne has to offer in the world of sport
When Anushka arrived in Melbourne, she was stepping into a new world, not just geographically, but professionally. Understanding the intricacies of sports management was a shift that required time and adaptation.
Her deep dive into Melbourne’s sporting industry began soon after completing her first trimester. She secured a role as an event assistant with Cricket Victoria, working on the Big Bash League (BBL) and Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).
Following this, Anushka took on a role at the Australian Grand Prix, ensuring seamless guest experiences as a Patron Services Officer while also volunteering with Masters Swimming Victoria. For her, each role reinforced the value of management, structure, and creating meaningful experiences for athletes and fans alike.
‘Sometimes the best opportunities come when you least expect them,’ she says.
Deakin’s connection to the sports industry
When Anushka, an avid football player, faced an unexpected opportunity to train the Under-15 Girls team at Eastern Lions Club, she hesitated initially but ultimately chose to take the leap. Transitioning from player to mentor was an eye-opening experience and a gratifying way for her to pass down knowledge, instil professionalism, and stay connected to the game she loves.
‘Deakin came highly recommended. But the real draw for me? Melbourne itself,’ explains Anushka.
As per Anushka, Melbourne is unlike other sporting cities. It offers year-round sporting events across various disciplines, AFL, cricket, basketball, netball, the Australian Open, the Grand Prix, and the A-League. The opportunities are endless.
Deakin’s faculty and industry connections greatly compliment the city’s sport culture. ‘Our professors are more than our subject-matter guides; they mentor, guide, and open doors for us,’ she says.
Anushka credits much of her early success to her lecturer and mentor, who has helped her navigate the job market, improve her resume, and connect with industry professionals.
At Deakin, education extends beyond the classroom. Career advice, CV reviews, and networking opportunities have been instrumental in shaping her professional journey.
‘With first-hand global exposure comes the thought of the many ways I can enhance sport at the grassroots in India.’
While Anushka is focused on making the most of her time in Australia, she remains deeply connected to Indian football. If given the chance to return and deploy her learning, her top priority would be professionalising grassroots programs.
In India, she has seen many young athletes struggle and too often, sport is treated as a hobby rather than a career path. Particularly for young girls, the challenges are even greater.
Her time at Deakin and in Melbourne’s sports industry is shaping her into a leader who understands sport intuitively. For Anushka, the dream isn’t just about growing the game, it’s about changing the way young athletes, especially girls, see football.
