My pathway from Deakin College to Deakin University

August 18, 2025 - 3 min read

Lam, from Vietnam, started his Deakin journey when he was just 16. Not yet ready to start his University degree, he first completed the Foundation program at Deakin College. Designed for international students, this program is similar to Australian Year 12 and prepares you for first year degree studies.

‘I found Deakin College to be the perfect pathway for me to adapt to the study environment, as well as experience the culture of the place,’ says Lam.

A foundation for further learning

For students who do not yet meet the entry requirements of their chosen degree, Deakin College offers a solid foundation of learning and a pathway to Deakin University. As well as the Foundation program, there are a range of diploma programs available in popular study areas including Business, Engineering, Health Sciences and Communications.

With smaller class sizes and a highly supportive study environment, Deakin College aims to nurture students and set them up for success. Lam found the curriculum beginner-friendly and easy to grasp, with plenty of study materials available. Most of all, his Deakin College teachers were a favourite part of his experience.

‘They are very welcoming and supportive when it comes to guiding new students in the program. Not only that, they were willing to assist with any difficulties I encountered during the study.’

Tailored student support

Starting out as an international student isn’t always easy, especially being under 18. Like Deakin University, Deakin College prides itself on the wide range of support it offers students – from academic support to faith chaplaincy and counselling services. For Lam, the support he received made all the difference.

‘One main challenge I faced was the regulation and balance of my mental health since transitioning from middle school to College wasn’t easy for me to handle alone. Luckily, I received a lot of support from my peers and especially my Deakin College U18 guardian, Winnie, who helped me pull through the tough times and smoothly finish my studies. In fact, I still receive regular support from them to this day, so much appreciated!’

A successful transition

After completing his Foundation program, Lam is now studying a Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence. Lam shares that he is enjoying the culture and style of education at Deakin, in particular the way he is constantly able to implement his new knowledge in his projects.

He says starting his degree was ‘quite a shift in the environment’, with a greater focus on self-driven learning and research. ‘I believe this is a very beneficial change, because it has taught me to handle all the assignments independently, while still actively seeking help from one of the many available resources from Deakin.’

More than 22,000 students have successfully progressed from Deakin College into degree studies at Deakin University. Could this be the first step on the pathway to your dream career?
