Learning about renewable energy solutions at Deakin University
I’m Akshita Bora, a proud Deakin alumni currently working as a Graduate Controls Engineer for Alerton Australia. I completed my Master of Engineering (Professional) at Deakin University.
My area of interest, inspiration and work motivation has always been sustainable power and energy systems. Working with renewable energy resources and creating cleaner energy systems which are both practical and sustainable is my core goal.
‘Be it online or offline, the classes and practical projects experiences at Deakin were very helpful. The faculty are friendly, and the environment is supportive.’ – Akshita
I could access huge laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities for practical work and undertake key projects. For my finals, I worked on hybrid solar and fuel power systems, where we created a system that could run on solar energy. Working with a team of Deakin students, I was able to gain practical experience in designing, creating and controlling a system.
I completed my degree learning on campus and also participating in online classes. During online classes, actual simulations of the practical were conducted. When learning on campus, we got to see the entire process conducted at the facility with complete understanding and clarity. The atmosphere was very friendly, there was scope to disagree and present your point of view. I strongly recommend students take advantage of the teaching and the facilities support.

I was an active member of Deakin University Students Association (DUSA) in addition to being a COVID Safe Advisor. It was a lovely opportunity to meet others and interact with a broad multi-cultural spectrum of people. Days on campus were filled with playing badminton and other sports, working at the science lab and studying in the library. The experience of being able to work while studying helped me develop the confidence and maturity to live independently away from home.
Anyone planning to study in Australia will get to interact with new people, network and make new friends. Australia is a friendly place. Remember it’s not just your university grades that matter here but also community out-reach, activities, sports participation and much more.
