Exploring language pathway options with Deakin
When Ruby Cheung decided to pursue a master’s degree, she knew she would need to improve her English language skills.
Ruby had been working for years as a Quality Assurance Officer in the food industry. Through this work she helped to establish and monitor food safety systems and procedures in Hong Kong. When she began researching master’s degrees, it was important for her to build on this knowledge and experience, which is why Ruby was eager to learn more about the Master of Nutrition and Population Health at Deakin University.
‘I have always been interested in the food process and what makes it safe to eat, so I decided to make it my career. After finishing my undergraduate degree, I worked professionally in the food industry for over 10 years. My master’s study at Deakin University, [the] Master of Nutrition and Population Health, focuses more on the relationship between human health and food – after all, we are what we eat.’
Having found a course that excited her, and opened further possibilities within her industry, Ruby then had to look at ensuring she was ready to study at an academic level in English. To fully embrace the opportunities of her postgraduate degree, a clear understanding of academic and professional English was essential.
This is where Deakin University English Language Institute (DUELI) can lend a helping hand. DUELI provides a clear solution for students looking to improve their academic and professional English language skills before commencing their undergraduate, postgraduate or master’s degree. Ruby enrolled in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course, which is one of several courses available to study at DUELI. You can enrol in the course that suits your study needs.
“DUELI helped me transition smoothly back into study mode,” says Ruby.
‘I improved my English academic skills in those ten weeks. I was able to prepare for my Master of Nutrition and Population Health course thanks to the teachers and classes I took.’
‘When it comes to writing structure, referencing, searching and critical thinking, I constantly refer to my notes from my EAP (English for Academic Purposes) classes for guidance.’
Ruby embracing all that Deakin Melbourne has to offer
Ruby enjoyed her experience so much, she decided to volunteer as a student leader after finishing at DUELI. She was able to support new students, share her own study story and represent DUELI at orientations, club events and campus tours. Ruby found that her volunteer role allowed her confidence in using English grow rapidly. “Being a DUELI student leader has provided me with many opportunities and fantastic experiences,” she says.
