Enjoying my online to on-campus (O2O) journey

June 2, 2021 - 6 min read

My name is Tushita Sharma and I am in a two-year program pursuing a Master of Business Analytics degree. What interested me the most in choosing this masters degree is how data is being handled by big companies. Data is the backbone to make decisions, using different tools for data visualisation, business intelligence reporting, analytics and statistical analysis. Data-led decisions have a large effect across many areas of business.

In this career path, I can help businesses tackle big data and provide them with appropriate solutions to a specific business problem. This is why I want to learn about various statistical and analytical tools that help in decision-making.

Why I chose to study at Deakin University, Australia

I chose to study at Deakin University for my masters degree in Business Analytics because I strongly believe that it will give me exposure and prepare me for the business environment. Deakin University helps students find the right job for them by providing various internships and other career opportunities. In addition to this, DeakinTALENT also helps especially international students to prepare them and guide them through different career-oriented workshops.

I am from India but if given an opportunity, I would really want to work in Australia to gain more practical knowledge and skills to excel in my field. Having a degree from Deakin University will not only expand the range of professional skills and abilities but also serves as a career launch pad, if I intend to look for a job in my homeland. I believe an international degree will surely give me an edge over other candidates, given the depth of knowledge and hands on experience at a global level.

The best part of choosing Deakin University is that the course I opted for is the only program accredited by Australian Computer Society (ACS). Having a course accredited by ACS means they are placed competitively for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) related jobs in Australia. ACS is a globally-recognised accreditation which will give me a competitive edge in my career.

Having a course accredited by ACS means that it has to adhere to specific IT industry requirements and means it is a high quality offering degree that reflect the requirements of industry. ACS is the ICT industry’s peak body, has over 50 000 members in Australia and represents on government policy and engagement. International students having an ACS accredited degrees means they’re placed competitively for ICT related jobs in Australia but also globally as ACS is recognised in many different countries around the world.

Starting my degree through Deakin’s Online to On-Campus (O2O) pathway

I started my course in July 2020 through the O2O pathway. I am currently doing my studies online from my home country due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. I would really like to add here that studying online has not in any way acted as a hurdle for me.

Since I had to start my course online, I had no clue how I would be able to manage my studies from home, being new to the whole virtual environment. But Deakin University ensured that the online study went smoothly for the students.

“I believe an international degree will surely give me an edge over other students/candidates, given the depth of knowledge and hands on experience at a global level.”

Before the start of my lectures, there was a whole week assigned for online orientation for the students that provides with all the relevant information required to know your University better.

Giving us a whole week for orientation and time flexibility was one of the best parts, since international students are spread across the globe at times like these and it becomes difficult to stick to one time.

O2O gives us access to interactive lectures and our professors support us through live consultations

Online studying does lack the benefit and exposure that we get on campus but Deakin University has made the O2O study smoothly for the international students. Each subject is interactive with live lectures with my professors and tutors. I can book for consultation sessions with them to discuss any assignment difficulties I may experience, or clarifications for a specific topic in the unit. Each subject is also provided with discussion boards where students can jump in for any questions they need answered.

We also have guest lecturers who are experts on the field so that we get the glimpse of the practical world and know how to deal with the real-world problems. We get the recorded lectures and receive learning material which is also quite helpful. The human interaction in a physical class is hard to match in a virtual environment but for me, the whole online learning experience is going well.

Studying at Deakin provides me with a plethora of opportunities

Deakin is really developing its activities and programs which focus more on international students. There is a plethora of opportunities at Deakin such as on campus internships, Virtual Deakin Abroad internships and exchanges, peer mentoring, students connect programs, Deakin University Student Association and employability workshops through Deakin Talent.

My goal after graduating

After the successful completion of my course, the next thing for me is to land the perfect job that would yield the best return on investment. With the help of my masters in the field of analytics, I strongly believe that it will help me grow with time and with more exposure and experience in the business.

I look forward to working as a business analyst in one of the top business analyst companies. My Deakin education will prepare me to stand out of the crowd and enrich my profile by unlocking top employment opportunities.
