Combining education with a passion to make a difference

For Arushi, it was a lifelong fascination with biosciences and her unwavering dedication to the welfare of animals that fuelled her journey to study in Australia. A determined and passionate student, she is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Deakin. ‘My decision to study at Deakin was influenced by Australia’s commitment to its rich biodiversity and environmental conservation,’ she says.

Hailing from Bengaluru, India, Arushi Shrivastava brought with her a love of nature and a desire to equip herself with the right skills to take care of animals. Her experiences at rescue shelters and internships at organizations in India such as Charlies Animal Rescue Centre and Life Sciences Education Trust solidified her desire to pursue her path beyond borders.

Arushi says the university’s state-of-the-art facilities and diverse student body appealed to her, offering a unique learning experience. Securing a Vice Chancellor’s Meritorious 100% scholarship at Deakin further solidified her decision.

Being one of the chosen few

The experience of being a Vice Chancellor’s Meritorious 100% scholar is not an ordinary one.

‘Receiving the scholarship has been a great learning experience,’ Arushi tells us. ‘It has helped build my confidence.’ The scholarship has helped her grow as an individual. As part of the Vice-Chancellor’s Professional Excellence Program (VCPEP) for scholars like her, she has had a chance to do things that she hadn’t imagined possible.

A personal and professional development program, VCPEP empowers students to achieve beyond their expectations, to be ready for the careers of the future, and to make significant contributions to our community.

Scholars face regular professional and personal challenges that test their skills in real-world scenarios. Arushi participated in a Professional Challenge with Price Waterhouse Coopers, tackling cybersecurity issues with peers. As a Personal Challenge, she chose to volunteer with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Australia.

Arushi has met scholars from all over the world and learned life skills beyond academic ones that she is sure will set her up for success. ‘Having an academic mentor with experience in the same field as mine to help me achieve my aspirations is a huge blessing,’ she says.

Preparing for excellence

Specialising in infection and immunity, Arushi has aligned her interests and immersed herself in her coursework at Deakin. She appreciates Deakin’s hands-on approach to learning, with practical experiences complementing theoretical knowledge. ‘Coming from India, one notices the difference between traditional learning and modern, applied learning.’  With qualified faculty who are responsive to her learning needs and facilities that support practical learning, Arushi feels confident about her progress.

What has been her  experience so far?

Like most international students upon their arrival, Arushi found herself navigating a new environment filled with opportunities and challenges. However, with the support of Student Central and her academic mentors, she quickly settled in and embraced the vibrant campus life. ‘You find so much inspiration all around. Engaging with students from diverse backgrounds and learning their stories and perspectives is truly enriching.’

As Arushi reflects on her journey so far, she feels grateful for the opportunities and support she has received. Looking ahead, she remains focused on her goal of making a positive impact in both the human and animal world and becoming a catalyst for change in her community and beyond.
